How Big is the Flag at Gateway Toyota?
A Landmark of Pride: The Story Behind the Gateway Toyota Giant Canadian Flag
If you have ever driven past Gateway Toyota, you have undoubtedly seen it: our massive Canadian flag snapping in the wind, standing as a beacon for drivers and a symbol of our pride in being a Canadian-operated dealership. It is more than just a piece of fabric; it is a local landmark.
But as Raegan recently pointed out, seeing it from the road doesn’t quite do its scale justice. To truly appreciate the size of this Maple Leaf, you have to see it on the ground.
The Dimensions: 15 Feet by 30 Feet of Patriotism
When we say "giant," we aren't exaggerating. The flag measures a staggering 15 feet in height and 30 feet in length. To put that into perspective for our metric-loving neighbours, that is approximately 4.6 metres by 9.1 metres.
Standing at ground level, the scale becomes almost overwhelming. As Raegan demonstrated, the height of the flag is roughly 2.5 times her height, and the length stretches out to 5 times her height. If you were to lay this flag out in your backyard, it would cover most of a standard city lot! It is one of the largest flags in the Edmonton area, designed to be visible from kilometres away, welcoming guests to the Gateway neighbourhood.
Maintaining an Icon: Weathering the Alberta Elements
Operating a flag of this magnitude in Alberta comes with unique challenges. Our province is known for its "spirited" weather, from high-velocity winds to heavy snow and the intense summer sun. Over time, even the most durable nylon and reinforced stitching can become tattered or "wind-whipped" at the edges.
At Gateway Toyota, we believe that if you are going to fly the flag, you must do so with respect. This means regular maintenance is essential. In her video, Raegan caught the flag during a rare moment on the dealership floor. We take the flag down periodically to inspect it for wear and tear before sending it out to professional specialists for repair. This ensures that the colours remain vibrant and the edges crisp, standing tall as a clean, proud representation of our country.
More Than a Decoration
Why do we fly a flag this big? Because Gateway Toyota is deeply rooted in the Canadian identity. Many of the vehicles we sell, like the Toyota RAV4 and the Toyota Corolla, are built right here in Canada. Our staff, our customers, and our families are part of the local fabric.
The flag serves as a reminder of the quality, reliability, and community-first spirit that both Toyota and Canada are known for. It’s a point of pride for our team to look up and see it every morning when we arrive at the dealership.
Have You Seen It Up Close?
The next time you are in the neighbourhood for a service appointment or to browse our latest hybrid inventory, take a moment to look up. Now that you know the math, 15' x 30', you might see it in a whole new light.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q1: Is the flag at Gateway Toyota the biggest in Edmonton?
A1: While there are several large flags in the city, ours is certainly one of the most prominent landmarks on the south side. At 450 square feet of fabric, it is designed for maximum visibility and impact.
Q2: How often is the flag replaced or repaired?
A2: Due to the high winds in the area, we inspect the flag every few months. Depending on the season, we may send it for professional repairs twice a year to ensure the "fly end" doesn't fray.
Q3: Do you fly the flag at night?
A3: Yes. Following proper flag etiquette, our giant Canadian flag is illuminated by high-intensity spotlights at night so that it can be seen clearly and respectfully 24 hours a day.
Q4: Can I take photos with the flag?
A4: Absolutely! We love seeing our guests post photos with our landmark. If you’re visiting the dealership, feel free to snap a picture, just remember to tag #GatewayToyota so we can see it!
