In 2016, a man named Victor Shepard drove his 2007 Toyota Tundra into a dealership for a routine checkup. The only thing that wasn't routine was his odometer: it read over 1,000,000 miles.

Shepard had used his Tundra for heavy-duty hauling, driving long distances cross-country for nearly a decade. Most impressively? The truck still had its original engine, original transmission, and even the original paint. Toyota was so fascinated by the truck’s condition that they made him an offer he couldn't refuse: a brand-new 2016 Tundra for free, in exchange for his high-mileage hero. Toyota’s engineers at the Technical Center wanted to perform a "teardown"—stripping the truck bumper-to-bumper to see how every bolt and bearing survived a million miles of real-world abuse.

Why do Toyotas like Victor’s survive when others don't? It comes down to two factors:

1. Over-Engineering: Toyota builds components to a higher threshold than required. During the teardown of Shepard’s truck, engineers found that the engine performed nearly as well as a brand-new unit, with almost no carbon buildup and pristine cylinder walls.
2. Diligent Maintenance: Victor Shepard recorded 117 dealership service visits over nine years. He didn't skip oil changes. He didn't ignore "funny noises." He followed the Toyota maintenance schedule religiously.
