Mastering Your Toyota Safety Sense (TSS)
Mastering Your Toyota Safety Sense (TSS)
At Gateway Toyota, we believe that safety isnโt just a feature, itโs a standard. Toyota Safety Sense (TSS) represents a milestone in automotive innovation, offering a suite of active safety technologies designed to protect you and your passengers. However, a safety system is most effective when the driver knows exactly how to customize it to their driving preferences.
In this guide, Raegan from Gateway Toyota walks us through the intuitive interface of the TSS system, ensuring you have total control over your vehicleโs advanced protective features.
What is Toyota Safety Sense?
Toyota Safety Sense is a comprehensive bundle of active safety features integrated into newer Toyota models. These systems are designed to support driver awareness, decision-making, and vehicle operation across a wide range of speeds and conditions. From preventing lane departures to mitigating frontal collisions, TSS acts as an extra set of eyes on the road.
Navigating Your Toyota Settings via the TFT Display
Most of your safety adjustments are housed within the Multi-Information Display (MID) or the Thin Film Transistor (TFT) screen located directly behind your steering wheel. You donโt need to navigate complex infotainment menus while parked; everything is accessible via your steering wheel controls.
Step-by-Step Adjustment Guide:
- Access the Menu: Use the directional arrows on your steering wheel to scroll to the right.
- Locate the Gear Icon: Continue scrolling until you reach the "Settings" tab (represented by a gear icon).
- Select Your Feature: Once in the settings menu, you will see a list of available safety icons.
Customizing Individual Features
The power of TSS lies in its flexibility. You can toggle features on or off or dive deeper into the sensitivity settings.
To Toggle On/Off: Simply highlight the feature (e.g., Lane Trace Assist) and press the OK button.
To Adjust Settings: To change things like warning volume or sensitivity, press and hold the OK button while the feature is highlighted. This will open a sub-menu for deeper customization.
Key Safety Features Explained
Lane Trace Assist (LTA)
LTA works in conjunction with Dynamic Radar Cruise Control to keep your vehicle centered in its lane. By monitoring visible lane markings or the path of the vehicle ahead, it provides small steering inputs to keep you on track.
Pre-Collision System (PCS)
This system uses a camera and radar to detect vehicles or pedestrians in your path. If it determines a frontal collision is likely, it prompts you to take action with audio and visual alerts. If you don't react in time, the system may automatically apply the brakes.
Blind Spot Monitor (BSM) & Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA)
These features are your best friends in heavy traffic and parking lots. BSM alerts you to vehicles in your side mirror's blind spots, while RCTA warns you of approaching vehicles from either side while you are backing out of a parking space.
Parking Sensors
Using ultrasonic wave sensors, your Toyota can detect objects near your front or rear bumpers. As you get closer to an object, the frequency of the warning beeps increases, helping you navigate tight Edmonton parking spots with ease.
Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC)
Unlike traditional cruise control, DRCC uses radar technology to maintain a preset following distance from the car in front of you.
Activation: Use the dedicated button on the right side of your steering wheel to turn the system on.
Adjusting Distance: You can choose between three different following distances by pressing the "Distance" button (identified by a car icon with horizontal lines in front of it). Each press cycles through long, medium, and short distances, which are reflected by the lines on your TFT display.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q1: Does Toyota Safety Sense work in the snow or heavy rain?
A1: TSS relies on cameras and radar sensors. Heavy snow, ice, or torrential rain can sometimes obstruct these sensors (usually located behind the Toyota emblem on the grille or at the top of the windshield). If the sensors are blocked, you may receive a "Clean Sensor" alert, and the systems may be temporarily disabled until visibility is restored.
Q2: Can I permanently turn off the Lane Departure Alert?
A2: While you can toggle the system off via the TFT settings menu, most Toyota models default to "On" or remember the last setting upon the next ignition cycle. We recommend keeping it active for maximum safety.
Q3: Does having Toyota Safety Sense lower my insurance premiums?
A3: Many insurance providers in Canada offer discounts for vehicles equipped with active safety technology like autonomous emergency braking (part of PCS). Contact your insurance broker to see if your Toyota qualifies.
