Toyota Safety Sense

Toyota Safety Sense is a series of active safety technologies that work together to increase driver capability and control. These technologies can help mitigate collisions, help drivers stay in their lanes and improve nighttime safety as they offer an overall enhanced experience on the road. Toyota Safety Sense comes in two packages, Toyota Safety Sense C and Toyota Safety Sense P. These packages will be offered on 2017 and 2018 models representing approximately 90 percent of expected sales in the coming year.Toyota is proud to be the first automaker that is committed to making these advanced safety systems standard on almost every model and trim level sold in Canada. Toyota Canada’s Vice President, Cyril Dimitris states that “advanced safety systems are typically included only on luxury vehicles – but we feel they’re so important that everybody deserves to benefit from them. That’s why we’re democratizing advanced safety technologies – and will be including them on almost every model we produce.” Toyota realizes that everyone benefits when vehicles are equipped with advanced automatic safety technologies and that this benefit is most useful and effective when drivers understand how they work.

THE TOYOTA SAFETY SENSE C

Toyota Safety Sense C includes the following safety technologies, aiming to help prevent or alleviate collisions in a wide range of vehicle speeds:

PRE-COLLISION SYSTEM

The Pre-Collision System provides preventative protection as it utilizes a camera and laser beam to detect vehicles ahead. When the possibility of collision is detected, this system prompts the driver through audio and visual alerts. If the driver notices the given alerts and brakes, the system may provide additional braking force using Brake Assist. In the case that a driver does not respond to the alerts, and if the system determines the possibility of a frontal collision is relatively high, the system can automatically apply the brakes and reduce speed by up to 30 km/hour to help the reduce driver impact and in some instances avoid the collision.

LANE DEPARTURE ALERT

The Lane Departure Alert System utilizes a camera to detect the visible white and yellow lane markings in front of the vehicle as well as the vehicle’s position on the road. If the system detects the vehicle is making an unintentional departure from its lane, the system alerts the driver with an audio and visual alert. When notified of this drift, the driver must check the surrounding road situation and cautiously operate the steering wheel to drive back to the intended part of the lane.

AUTOMATIC HIGH BEAMS

Automatic High Beams enhance visibility at nighttime without distracting other drivers with intense lighting. It utilizes an in-vehicle camera to detect the headlights of oncoming traffic and the taillights of the vehicles ahead. The system can automatically switch between high and low beams to accommodate the needs of the moment.

Toyota Safety Sense C is standard on the following 2017 Toyota models: Toyota Yaris Hatchback, Toyota Prius c and Toyota Corolla iM.

THE TOYOTA SAFETY SENSE P

The following safety technologies are included with the Toyota Safety Sense C package, enhancing the Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection functionality, and the Lane Departure Alert by adding a Steering Assist function on certain models. It also includes Dynamic Radar Cruise Control.

PRE-COLLISION SYSTEM WITH PEDESTRIAN DETECTION

With this advanced version of the Pre-Collision System, millimetre-wave radar sensors and a camera are used to help detect the vehicle ahead as well as may also help to detect pedestrians. If the system determines a possible collision with the vehicle ahead or the possibility of a frontal collision with a pedestrian, it then prompts the driver to take immediate action and brake through visual and audio alerts. As the driver responds to these alerts, the system can provide additional braking force using Brake Assist. If the driver does not react to the alerts, the system can apply the brakes and reduce speed to lessen the impact and in certain cases avoid the collision.

LANE DEPARTURE ALERT WITH STEERING ASSIST FUNCTION

Adding to the Lane Departure Alert in vehicles equipped with TSS-C, vehicles with TSS-P and Electronic Power Steering also feature a Steering Assist function. This system can detect when the vehicle is drifting out of its visibly marked lane and can provide gentle corrective steering inputs for a limited time to help guide the vehicle into its lane.

AUTOMATIC HIGH BEAMS

Automatic High Beams is a safety system that aims to provide drivers with enhanced lighting without causing a limitation to the visibility of other drivers on the road. It accomplishes this through the use of an in-vehicle camera, which can detect the headlights of oncoming vehicles and taillights of preceding vehicles. The system detects when other vehicles are within relative proximity and will automatically switch between high and low beams to provide adequate lighting.

DYNAMIC RADAR CRUISE CONTROL

Vehicles equipped with TSS-P are given the innovative Dynamic Radar Cruise Control. Comparable to conventional cruise control features, this system can help a vehicle travel at a pre-set speed as well as maintain a pre-set vehicle-to-vehicle distance. To detect the preferred speed and distance, Dynamic Radar Cruise Control uses a forward-facing camera with a millimetre-wave radar to monitor the vehicle ahead for seamless acceleration and deceleration.

Toyota Safety Sense P is included as standard safety equipment on the following models, starting with the 2017 model year: Toyota Corolla, Toyota Prius, Toyota Prius Prime, Toyota RAV4 and RAV4 Hybrid, Toyota Highlander and Highlander Hybrid.

AWARENESS AND EDUCATION

New and innovative safety systems like Toyota Safety Sense can greatly improve driver and passenger safety. For these technologies to be successfully introduced, Canadians need to be given the opportunity to educate themselves on how they work. To ensure that Canadians are given the opportunity to fully understand these safety systems, Toyota Canada has launched a comprehensive awareness and education campaign around Toyota Safety Sense. This campaign includes:

  • Training Toyota Dealer staff through a series of training sessions across the country.
  • Dedicated events for automotive journalists and other media including demonstrations of the Pre-Collision System with vehicle and pedestrian detection, Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, and Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist.
  • Education tools for Toyota owners to help them learn about the safety systems in their new vehicle before ownership
  • Toyota Safety System marketing strategies to help raise awareness of Toyota Safety Sense and the role that new technologies play in automobile safety through traditional and online media channels.
  • Interaction opportunities that allow Canadians to experience Toyota vehicles and their technologies first-hand.

Advanced safety technologies can provide Canadians with peace of mind as they drive with an understanding of their power and limitations. Toyota is committed to opening an honest conversation with Canadians about these safety technologies so that their maximum potential can be utilized.
